  • Welcome | First Presbyterian Church | Fort Smith

WHO WE ARE What do you want to know about a church before you visit it? I don’t have any idea, so I am going to tell you a few things that I think you should know about First Presbyterian Church. We were one of the first congregations planted in Fort Smith, established back in the 1840s. All those people are dead now, but other people have managed to keep this thing going for nigh on 175 years. I feel that alone deserves some respect, I mean how many other things in our community have been around that long? You see my point. We’ve done a lot of different things over the years, and we have lots of folks who have worshipped here for decades, but that just makes us colorful! Today, we have three areas of emphasis. The first is mission. We define this as helping and loving our neighbors in Fort Smith. You can check out our mission page to learn more, but if there is one way I like to describe our philosophy it is this; we seek to empower and encourage people we help, and to foster their sense of dignity and self-worth. Everyone is valuable and we want to help folks transform their lives. The second area of emphasis is music. I’m not going to lie, some of us don’t love to sing, but we love to listen to other people sing. Our music in our two worship services is eclectic. Day One ranges from praise and worship to bluegrass. Our traditional worship service is, well, traditional. We have a really great organ, and you may think, “I don’t like the organ, in fact, I don’t even know what it is,” but trust me when I say if you like music you will like the organ. It’s traditional, but it’s still pretty great. We also host a concert series called, “The Pates-McDonald Music Series.” This series features folks on the classical spectrum who are excellent musicians that you can listen to for free in our sanctuary. The third area of emphasis is education. We are Presbyterians and we really like to think. We like to discuss interesting things about our faith and world, and we like to listen to smart, educated folks tell us what they have learned. My wife and co-pastor, Tasha, and I teach each Sunday during the school year. You can learn more about those classes on the education tab but suffice to say they cover a broad range of topics, issues, ideas, and theology. This is First Presbyterian in a very small nutshell. All of our areas of emphasis are rooted in what we believe about Jesus, how we experience him, and how we feel he calls us to live. We aren’t perfect, quite the opposite, but we like Jesus and we do our level best to make him the center of things around here. Perhaps that is how we have lasted this long as a church. I have been here for several years now, and I have to say that I love this church, I hope you will love it too. Peace, The Reverend Phillip Blackburn MULTIMEDIA SOCIAL MEDIA Follow us on Facebook , Instagram , and YouTube . 1 PRES POD Find the 1PRESPOD on Spotify , iTunes , or anywhere you get your podcasts.

  • Music | First Presbyterian Church | Fort Smith

DayOne Band Our DayOne Band contain multitudes! From modern worship songs to bluegrass, you're guaranteed to leave feeling easy like Sunday morning after this contemporary service at 9am. Chancel Choir Our Chancel Choir fills the sanctuary with traditional music during our 11 o'clock service. This talented group will whisk you away toward a feeling unique to your daily life. Handbells Don't shy away from the chimes of these bells! We offer beginner-friendly practices for anyone who wants to learn a new skill (and make some friends along the way). Pates Mcdonald Music series Life, as they say, is worth living in Fort Smith, due in no small part to the vibrant arts programs that flourish here. The Pates/McDonald Music Series has long contributed to this thriving musical culture with a rich variety of chamber music programs. All concerts in the series are free and open to the public, thanks to the generous support of our sponsors. Through the vision of Charlie and Annie Pates, and named in honor of organist Mary McDonald, the Pates/McDonald Series began as a lasting tribute to the woman who devoted her life to bringing the joy of music to the lives of others. A member of First Presbyterian Church since child-hood, Mary began her tenure as church organist in the 1955. She ministered through music quietly and selflessly. Though Mary retired in 1996, she graciously returned on several occasions to serve as Interim Organist. Throughout much of her tenure at First Presbyterian Church, Mary also directed the Children’s Choirs, Handbell Choirs, and the Chancel Choir. First Presbyterian Church is proud to host the Pates/McDonald Music Series in their memory.

  • Children's Ministry | First Pres

First Pres Kids Our Children's Ministry is focused on teaching children all about God and God's love for them just as they are! Sunday School - Fall 2025 Sunday School takes place every Sunday at 10am in the third floor classrooms. We're split into 2 groups: Pre-K through 1st grade and 2nd grade through 5th grade. Each lesson is taught by well-trained, background checked volunteers. This fall we are learning about people God called to be leaders like David and Samuel! We not only talk about who these people were, but what makes a good leader. Our goal is to allow children to see themselves as leaders even though they are young and develop their confidence. Nursery Sundays from 8:40 to noon Children are welcome and wanted in church services, but children ages 0 to 5 are also welcome in our nursery. The staff is well-trained and background checked with multiple years of experience working with small children.
